Taking over a losing team is like inheriting a ship with holes in the hull—it’s taking on water, it’s slow, and it feels like it’s on the verge of sinking. As a coach, you’re tasked with not only plugging those holes but also getting that ship moving swiftly toward victory. It’s not a small challenge. The team comes with bad habits, weak skills, and mental control issues—focus, emotional control, frustration, anger—all of which have kept them anchored in a cycle of losing. Their effort and conditioning levels are probably less than ideal, too.

But let’s be clear: losing sucks. There’s no sugar-coating it. Whether you’re a coach or an athlete, repeated losses can be demoralizing, leading to doubt and frustration. The temptation to give up is real, but the journey from a losing culture to a winning one is not just possible—it’s achievable if you commit to a structured approach. This journey can be broken down into what I call “The Levels of Winning,” a progressive roadmap that takes a team from the depths of defeat to the heights of consistent victory.

Level C:
Improving Focus, Conditioning, and Skills

The first step in transforming a losing team is to focus on the fundamentals: Mental Focus, Conditioning, and Key Skills. At this stage, the goal is not necessarily to win games but to set the foundation for future success.

Mental Focus

One of the most critical issues in a losing team is a lack of focus. Players may have developed bad habits, such as not listening during practice, losing concentration during games, or getting easily distracted by emotions or external factors. As a coach, your first priority is to instill a sense of discipline and concentration in your players. This can be achieved through structured practices that emphasize attention to detail and mental toughness. For instance, drills that require players to react quickly to changing situations can help improve focus and decision-making.

Conditioning

Another common issue with losing teams is poor conditioning. A team that lacks endurance will falter in the final minutes of a game, no matter how well they play initially. Improving conditioning is non-negotiable. This involves not only physical training but also mental conditioning—teaching players to push through fatigue and stay mentally sharp when they’re physically exhausted. Implementing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or endurance-based drills can help build the physical stamina required for sustained performance.

Skills Development

At this level, skill development is about going back to basics. This might mean re-teaching fundamental techniques like shooting, passing, dribbling, or defending. It’s crucial to ensure that players are not just participating in drills but are also understanding the “why” behind each exercise. Skills are developing when players start executing in games what they’ve been learning in practice—whether it’s successfully running plays, applying pressure defense, executing fast breaks, or setting effective traps.

As a coach, it’s essential to celebrate small victories at this stage. When a player successfully executes a new skill in a game, it’s a sign of progress. These moments build confidence and create a positive feedback loop, encouraging further effort and improvement.

Level B2:
Competitive Effort

Once the team has made progress in focus, conditioning, and skills, they often find themselves in close games. They may still lose more than they win, but there’s a noticeable shift—they’re competitive. This stage is characterized by increased effort and the ability to win parts of the game, such as a quarter or a half, even if the overall result is a loss.

Good Effort

At Level B2, effort is no longer a sporadic occurrence but a consistent theme. Players are beginning to take pride in their work ethic, pushing themselves and each other to higher standards. They’re competing hard every minute of every game, regardless of the score. This competitive effort is the foundation upon which winning is built. It’s about teaching the players that success isn’t just about the final score—it’s about winning each moment, each possession.

Winning Parts of the Game

Although the team may still lose, they begin to win quarters or halves. This is a significant milestone because it shows that the team is capable of executing a game plan effectively for extended periods. The challenge at this level is to maintain focus and effort throughout the entire game, rather than just in spurts. Coaches should emphasize the importance of consistency and perseverance, reminding players that winning quarters is the first step toward winning games.

Level B1:
Over the Hump

This is the stage where a team begins to experience more frequent success. They’ve “overcome the hump” and start to win close games that they might have lost before. Confidence begins to build, and with it, a crucial shift in mentality occurs—the team starts to believe they can win, even in high-pressure situations.

Winning Close Games

At Level B1, the team has learned how to handle crunch time. They no longer crumble under pressure; instead, they thrive in it. Winning close games is a skill in itself, requiring not only physical execution but also mental toughness and strategic awareness. Players must trust each other and their ability to perform in critical moments. Coaches should focus on situational practices—like late-game scenarios—to ensure the team is prepared for anything that comes their way during a game.

Crunch Time Confidence

Confidence is the key to success at this level. A team that believes in its ability to win is dangerous. This confidence is built through experience—by repeatedly finding themselves in tight situations and learning how to navigate them successfully. It’s important for the coach to reinforce this confidence by highlighting past successes and encouraging players to trust their training and instincts.

Level A:
Consistent Winning

Reaching Level A is the ultimate goal—a stage where winning becomes a habit rather than an exception. At this level, the team not only wins but does so convincingly. You are blowing out opponents by 20+ points and doing so consistently.

Blowouts and Dominance

When a team reaches Level A, they’re not just winning—they’re dominating. Blowouts happen when a team is firing on all cylinders—offense, defense, and everything in between. The team has developed a winning culture, and the players expect to win every time they step on the court. This mindset shift is critical. The fear of losing is replaced by the expectation of victory, which drives the team to perform at a high level consistently.

Maintaining Consistency

Consistency is the hallmark of a winning team. It’s not about peaking for one game but about sustaining a high level of performance across the entire season. This requires relentless effort in practice, continuous skill development, and unwavering mental toughness. Coaches should keep pushing the team, reminding them that there’s always room for improvement, even when they’re winning consistently.

The Bottom Line: Don’t Give Up

Turning around a losing program is never easy. It’s a process that requires patience, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the potential of the team. There will be setbacks, moments of doubt, and possibly an extended period of losing. But as long as you stay committed to the process and keep pushing your players to improve, the wins will come.

Win or Learn

One of the most important lessons to impart to your team is the concept of “Win or Learn.” In the early stages, when losses are more common than wins, it’s crucial to frame each game as a learning opportunity. What went well? What needs to be improved? By focusing on continuous improvement, rather than just the outcome, you help your players develop a growth mindset—a belief that they can always get better with effort and practice.

Set Clear Expectations

From day one, it’s essential to set clear expectations for your team. These expectations should cover everything from effort and attitude to punctuality and respect. By establishing a standard for everything, you create a culture of accountability and discipline. Rules are important, but standards are what sustain a winning culture. These standards should apply to everyone—no exceptions. When players understand that everyone is held to the same standard, they’re more likely to buy into the program and push themselves to meet those expectations.

How to develop Anticipation Skills

How are your anticipation skills?
What happens next?

The world of sports is teeming with a myriad of physical and mental talents. Among these, one invaluable trait shared by the greatest athletes is the ability to anticipate future outcomes—an aptitude to predict what’s coming next and respond accordingly.

Much like the legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky, who talked about “skating to where the puck would be,” basketball players can use anticipation to always be “one step ahead.”

The beauty of anticipation lies in its two-fold benefits. Firstly, it provides a significant edge during a game, allowing players to read the opponent’s moves, adapt, and position themselves better. Secondly, it empowers the mental fortitude of an athlete, fostering a winning mindset and confidence that fuels success on and off the court.

How to see the future…
Know where to look

In basketball, an opponent’s eyes often give away the direction of their next action without them even knowing they are doing it. Face-guarding is a good example of this. By tracking the eyes of your opponent, you can often see when the ball is coming toward them since most people track the ball with their eyes and follow the arc of the ball. In other words, they look UP when the ball is coming. This is the point when you need to take action, turn toward the incoming ball and intercept the pass.

Eyes and Feet:
Know what to look for.

Aside from your opponent’s eyes, you can also get information based on their footwork (where are going to go) as well as the way they handle the ball (is it on the right or left side?). These hints can tell you what they are most likely going to do.

Take Action:
Seeing is worthless without Action.

Knowing what someone will do is worthless without doing something about it. You could challenge the movement or intercept the pass. In any case, if you anticipate what’s going to happen and do nothing, it’s effectively the same as not knowing.

Observe at all times:
Practice observation skills.

When you are sitting on the bench, pay close attention to players that you may encounter when you get in the game. How do they move? Do they have any habits that you can manipulate so they “give” you an advantage?

You can improve your “observation skills” in practice whether you are scrimmaging or just doing drills. Instead of just standing around between your turns doing drills, focus on one player on your team and see if you can predict what they will do next. What’s their favorite move? How could you predict when they will use it ? (Or what could you do to cause them to use it?)

Observation is like many other skills… it gets better the more you use it.

Anticipation – Timing and Rhythm:
When will it happen?

As you observe your target opponent, take a mental note of their timing and the rhythm that they use when performing “their move”. As a defender, if you can disrupt their rhythm, it’s very likely that they will commit an offensive foul or at least be uncomfortable if they force up a shot. Pay attention to what they do over and over again. Do they always spin a certain way when they dribble into traffic? Do they always cross over to their other hand when you challenge them at a certain spot on the floor?

Rules and Mechanics:
The ref’s can help you win!

The power of anticipation is also closely linked with a profound understanding of the game’s rules and mechanics. By mastering the fundamentals of basketball, players can better predict the game’s flow, ascertaining when to make critical moves such as stealing a pass, blocking a shot, or positioning for a rebound.

For example, does your opponent always take the ball out of bounds the same way? With the same type of pass to the same person? Can you position yourself such that they do not see you as a threat but you can still steal the ball?

Drills that simulate particular situations such as sideline out of bounds, baseline out of bounds or a trapping defense are another effective way to nurture your anticipation skills. These practice drills, mirroring actual game situations, can help athletes predict outcomes and react swiftly under pressure. Simulations also encourage players to utilize their instinct, another critical aspect of anticipation. Once you know where the next pass is going to go, it’s a relatively simple task to figure out a way to steal the ball.

Be Ready:
Are You Physically Prepared

Achieving and maintaining physical fitness plays an underrated role in fostering anticipation. The faster and more agile a player, the better they can implement their anticipatory decisions. High-level fitness allows a more efficient execution of anticipated moves, creating more opportunities for scoring and defending. Are you ready to act on the future actions that you see developing?

Lastly, anticipation also hinges on mental strength. As you know if you follow this blog on a regular basis or have heard Coach Wheeler speak at your basketball camp, developing a winning mindset demands resilience, focus, and confidence. It requires the willpower to take calculated risks based on predicted outcomes plus the knowledge that your team will back you up when the risky action doesn’t pay off. the “Myth” of Talent

I dislike the whole concept of “talent”. It assumes that some people have it and others do not. I believe that everyone is different and, for some people, “talent” may be buried or unseen for years or decades. Skill, on the other hand, is something that is always available for improvement. It is easy to see where you stand in terms of specific skills. On the other hand, the amount of “talent”, or even “potential talent” you have is difficult to determine precisely.

The fixed vs. growth mindset
Let’s start by saying that I am a firm believer in the growth mindset. Psychologist Carol Dweck wrote a book that said individuals can possess either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe that abilities are inherent, fixed traits that cannot be significantly developed. On the other hand, individuals with a growth mindset understand skills and abilities can be cultivated. You can grow your abilities through dedication, effort, and learning.

This mindset dichotomy has far-reaching implications for the perception of talent. Some argue that talent is an innate, predetermined quality that sets individuals apart. The concept of a growth mindset challenges this notion. By emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, practice, and resilience you can develop your skills to their full potential. By accepting a growth mindset, individuals can tap into their capacity for growth. This can unlock your true potential, blurring the lines between talent and skill.

The Skill Stack:

In the ongoing debate between skill and talent, one concept that challenges the conventional understanding is the “skill stack.” This is a term coined by the renowned cartoonist and author Scott Adams. The skill stack refers to the combination of various skills that an individual possesses. Rather than focusing solely on innate talent or singular expertise, the skill stack emphasizes the value of acquiring a diverse range of skills and leveraging them in unique ways.

According to Adams, the skill stack is like building a personal inventory of abilities that, when combined, create a unique advantage in the professional world. Talent is just the most visible part of your skill stack. It’s what is on top of the stack. It does not mean that you don’t have other, perhaps even more impressive, “talents” or undeveloped skills. It is just visible… now.

Talent is what you make of it
How old was Michael Jordan when he first dunked in a game? (see the video below) What if he never practiced after the first time? Would he have made it to the NBA? Would he win 6 NBA championships? Probably not.

You may see a glimpse of your talent early in your life. However, if it is not developed through hard work, learning your craft and attention to details, you will never achieve your highest potential.

In summary, the skill stack mentality challenges the myth of talent. By highlighting the acquisition and combination of diverse skills, you will be able to achieve your highest potential. Success is not solely determined by the abilities you were born with but rather by the deliberate cultivation of a varied skill set. What is Fastbreak Basketball?

Fastbreak basketball is an exciting and popular way of playing the game of basketball. It is an up-tempo style of play characterized by a team quickly transitioning from offense to defense and vice versa.

The teams that excel in fastbreak basketball are able to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes to create easy scoring opportunities. The primary objective of fastbreak basketball is to score as many points as quickly as possible.

How to Fastbreak…

Teams that fastbreak accomplish it by making good use of turnovers and missed shots. If a team can capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes, they can score points quickly. If a team can defend well and force their opponent to take longer shots, they can also score quickly by getting the ball down the court in a hurry.

One of the key components of fastbreak basketball is the ability to quickly transition from offense to defense and vice versa. This means that the players must be able to quickly react to the ball and make the necessary adjustments. If the players can make these adjustments quickly, they can create easy scoring opportunities and put their opponents on their heels.

The fastbreak also requires a team to be able to move the ball up the court quickly and accurately. This requires players to make good passes, set screens, and have good timing. A good fastbreak will be able to move the ball up the court quickly while still being able to make the correct passes and find open shots.

Teamwork…

In order for a team to be successful in fastbreak basketball, they must be able to play as a cohesive unit. This means that every player must be able to read the play and anticipate the movements of their teammates.

Good communication by players is also key. Players must be able to call out plays and let their teammates know where they will be on the court. Fastbreak basketball is an exciting and dynamic style of play that requires good communication, teamwork, and quick thinking. It can be a great way to score points quickly and efficiently. That is if the team can effectively transition from offense to defense and make good passes. When utilized properly, fastbreak basketball can make a team unstoppable.

Working the Pick & Roll

When you run a play, are you “going through the motions” of setting a pick in a certain location (because coach told you to)? Or do you know how to make a pick and roll really work?

Too often I see players who either don’t know they are not working the Pick & Roll correctly or they just don’t care. This is not a problem for just middle school players. The video below features some of the best players in the NBA along with one of the best coaches in the game and while the tips that are offered are important and helpful, the last example shows a glaring problem that happens at all levels of basketball (even with the NBA players in the video).

Did you see what was wrong with the last Pick and Roll in the video?

The player setting the pick let the defense get past him and he rolled too late. Once the player setting the pick makes contact with the ball handler’s defender, he should take control of the interaction, pivot around the ball handler’s defender and get the defender on his back.

Important note… The pivot by the player setting the pick should be in the direction of the ball so you can see where the ball is and what the ball handler is doing. Many players think they can make a quicker move by “slipping” towards the basket but they also loose sight of the ball handler when they do it. They are also giving up the positional advantage that they can get by pivoting around the ballhandler’s defender.

Can a Pick and Roll work every time? With every combination of offensive players and defensive players? Probably not but it can work most of the time if, as an offensive player, you understand the opportunities presented to you during a Pick and Roll and can take advantage of them.

Book Review-12 Rules by Jordan Peterson

12 Rules for lifeJordan Peterson’s book, “12 Rules for Life, An Antidote for Chaos” has some good ideas but it is also heavy on Bible stories and quotes from philosophers and psychologists.

First question you probably have…

Are the 12 Rules worthwhile? Will they help you build a better life? Quick answer: Yes. They are worth reading but you might want to read through the summary below first to see if you are interested in reading more. Some of the chapters can get a little long winded (and go off on a few tangents) so you need to be motivated to stick with the book.

Let’s take a look at a brief summary of each rule…

Rule 1 – Stand up straight with your Rule shoulders back.

This is partly related to “Fake it until you make it.” It means that you should project confidence physically even if you might not be really “feeling it.” [Little secret that goes along with this… if you physically project confidence (or any other emotion really) you will start to move toward the actual feeling. Our emotions are tied to our physical “habits” so if you want to feel better (or more confident), move like you do when you feel that emotion… and the emotion will come.

Grade for Rule 1 … A+ (very worthwhile).

Rule 2 – Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.

Most people treat their pets better than than they treat themselves. They take them for regular checkups while forgetting to do the same thing for themselves. If you are a parent there are an endless number of ways that you sacrifice for your kids. This rule says that you should at least apply the same standards to yourself and while it makes sense, it may be difficult to change your habits when it comes to self-maintenance.

Grade for Rule 2 … B+. This should be common sense but more people need to recognize that they can give more by taking care of themselves instead of sacrificing for others.

Rule 3 – Make Friends with people who want the best for you.

If you have studied nearly anything in the area of “personal development”, you have probably heard the saying that “You are the average of the 5 people who you spend the most time with.” If you hang out with millionaires, the odds are better that you become one too. If you hang out with people who eat poorly and never exercise, what do you think the odds are that you will be overweight? Jordan Peterson takes a little different angle on this concept. He suggests that finding people who will hold you to a higher standard will help you become your best self and realize more of your potential, Good idea. Not especially original but definitely something to apply to your life.

Grade for Rule 3 … A. This is a good idea, just not especially original. You have probably heard something similar already.

Rule 4 – Compare Yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.

This Rule especially applies to athletes but it can be applied to nearly any endeavor (academics, business). What you might think is “talent” may just be the result of someone working on a particular skill for longer than someone else. This article about “The Talent Myth” talks more about this concept.

The key point is that we need to be careful who we compare ourselves to. Everyone has their own journey and often someone else is a currently at a different point in their journey. Use them as an example or learn from them if you want to achieve whatever it is that they have achieved. Seems simple, right? Only if you keep this rule in mind and don’t make yourself feel bad because you “aren’t there yet”!

Grade for Rule 4… A.  Important to remember. Learn from those ahead of you. Don’t feel bad because you aren’t there yet. Get to work!

Rule 5 – Don’t let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.

This rule applies mostly to parents but it could also be applied to managers within a company. Jordan Peterson includes many ideas for raising children as part of his 12 Rules and most of them are built around the idea of socializing kids so they can operate effectively in society. We live in a society and children need to learn what is expected. Making life easy for kids isn’t really doing them any favors in the long run. Another way of phrasing this rule… “Don’t raise a PIA.”

Grade for Rule 5 … B-. Good idea for parents but this rule doesn’t have as much application as the other rules.

Rule 6 – Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.

This is, by far, the best advice of the “12 Rules” book. Another way to say it is to “Tame your demons before tackling the world’s problems.” Jordan Peterson suggests that it is important to “Create Order in your life” where you can. [He talks a lot about “Order” and “Chaos” while drawing comparisons with Heaven and Hell.] The basic idea is that creating Order in your life (by taking control of what you can control) will give you the secure foundation you need to tackle the Chaos you will inevitably encounter.

Quick note… Chaos is not always bad. Creativity and Variety can come from Chaos. Order is not always good. Too much Order and you get boredom or limited growth. This may sound kind of Zen (Jordan explains the meaning of the Zen Circle and how it relates to Chaos/Order too.)

Grade for Rule 6 … A+  Best advice in the book. Do this first.

Rule 7 – Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient).

In other words… Shortcuts are not the answer. “Meaning” comes from “worthwhile challenges” and Jordan suggests that you should choose the challenges that will add meaning to your life. If you have been searching for the “Meaning of Life”, this might be as close to a good answer as you might find.

Grade for Rule 7 … A+. How can the “Meaning of Life” not get an A+? Is it easy to focus on doing something meaningful?…No. Is it worth it… you betcha.

Rule 8 – Tell the truth – or at least, don’t lie.

Truth is a tough subject. Jordan Peterson says Truth is order (and is also easier to remember than nearly any fiction you might conceive). Finding “Truth” also means confronting reality so tht you are not deceiving yourself (or others). The better we deal with reality, the better our results. Former CEO of GE, Jack Welch, has written a number of books and has said that the ability to discover reality and deal with it is one of the keys to the success he had when he ran General Electric.

Another way to state this rule would be to “Be a Pursuer and Purveyor of the Truth”. The only problem with the truth is that sometimes it isn’t “pleasant”. On the other hand, a little short term discomfort (like telling someone they need to improve something) is better than letting the problem grow. Rip that “Truth Bandaid” off quickly! [That’s my metaphor, not Jordan’s].

Grade for Rule 8 … A-  While this rule seems simple, it can be tough to implement. If it was phrased along the lines of “Deal with Reality” (instead of the Truth angle) it might have wider application… but still worth applying!

Rule 9 – Assume the person you are listening to might know something you don’t.

This rule kind of shows how Jordan Peterson is Canadian. Canadians are known for being “nice” (compared to Americans) and this rule is something that will improve the connections you develop through your conversations with other people.

Another way to say it… Learn from others. They have done things you haven’t.  If we focus on what we are going to say, we lose the chance to learn something.

Grade for Rule 9 … A.  If you want to get better, you need new ideas. The best way to get new ideas is from other people. Listen. You have two ears and one mouth. 2-1, Listening to Speaking is a good start!

Rule 10 – Be precise in your speech.

This is one of the rules that isn’t exactly self evident by itself. One part of “precise speech” is the “Avoid blanket statements.” Another is to “Recognize Opinions vs Facts.” Jordan Peterson points out that precise communication requires work. It requires an understanding of the pitfalls of language as well as an open mind. How precise is your language?

Grade for Rule 10 …  A.  This is an area we could all improve and Jordan Peterson is someone who is very precise with his language. [Check out this interview where he talks about the Gender Wage Gap.]

Rule 11 – Do not bother children when they are skateboarding.

This is another rule that applies for parents (or adults who teach or manage children).  Bottom line, according to Jordan Peterson, is that Children need challenges. This is how they explore the edges of their capabilities. They might get hurt. That’s part of the process… and part of the excitement.

Grade for Rule 11 … A.  We all need challenges if we are going to grow. Not everyone will want to be a skateboarder but there are plenty of challenges out there… for adults as well as kids.

Rule 12 – Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street.

Another way of saying this (without the cat reference) is to “Engage with Opportunites to LIVE!” This is a good rule to end with because it is very easy to hide in our own little world and miss out on lots of the great parts of life, such as petting a cat (or dog). Don’t forget to connect with the outside world. There are lots of great things going on out there. When the opportunity comes around… ENGAGE!

Grade for Rule 12 … A+. Maybe this grade is higher than it needs to be… but I get to pat my dog every day and I highly recommend it for everyone!

Bottom Line – Is 12 Rules worth a read?

Jordan B. Peterson has clearly thought about life and “what works”. He has a strong grasp of the studies that explain the human condition. He offers wisdom that is generally accepted (and backed by research) within his field (psychology).

By reading the “12 Rules”, I learned a lot about the Bible and the psychology of success. There are plenty of interesting stories and examples … if you can wade through everything else. There are also many pop culture references (and ancient wisdom) that I navigated fairly successfully. On the other hand, some readers who did not grow up in the 60’s/70’s might not get the references. I am about the same age & educational level as Jordan Peterson so we start from a similar frame of reference.

If you found this review of the 12 Rules interesting, you may want to read the book. If you didn’t see anything that you want to dig into, you probably won’t like wading through all of Jordan Peterson’s stories and cultural references.  Professor Peterson tends to go off on tangents so the book is not as easy to read as it could have been. I also found that there were times when it seemed like he was trying to prove how smart he is. As a university professor, this might be second nature but I could probably edit the whole book down to less than 2000 words. [BTW- this post is less than 2000 words.]  Hopefully this post was helpful.

Court Awareness – K.I.M. games

Court Awareness, sometimes called “situational awareness”, is a critical skill if you want to be a top player on a highly successful team in almost any sport. In simplest terms, it is being aware of what is going on around you. At the next level, you are aware of what each observation means and what might happen next.

It can also be a very helpful skill in other areas of life. In fact, some of the exercises that will be presented below, are based on articles from military blogs explaining how awareness can be applied in battle and other situations.

Basketball Court Awareness…

Learning from the Master

The short video below shows how one of the best passers of all time uses a highly developed court awareness to make some amazing passes. There are some passes where he is looking at the recipient of his pass but there are many more where he is either looking away or anticipates where his team mate will be to accept his pass (and usually score).

What does Court Awareness mean for basketball players?

Court Awareness, at its peak, means that you are aware of all the players on the court… where they are, where they are moving, who has the ball, where they are looking and even what they might be saying. It extends to knowing the current score as well as how much time is on the clock as well. If your state has a shot clock, court awareness includes knowing how much time is left whether you are on offense or defense.

Seems like a lot of information to process all at once, doesn’t it? The good news is that your court awareness can be developed over time… if you put in the effort to improve.

How to improve court awareness

The K.I.M. game, also known as Keep In Memory, is an effective and enjoyable method to boost your court awareness skills. The fundamental concept behind this game is to improve the player’s ability to recall a dynamic scene accurately, a trait crucial in understanding the constantly changing dynamics on a basketball court.

In this game, you’re encouraged to take a mental ‘snapshot’ of the current game state – player positions, who has the ball, the clock, and the score. Then, as the game progresses, you must frequently refer back to these mental snapshots, updating them constantly. This mimics the real-time process in an actual game, as you strive to keep an updated mental image of the court situation while simultaneously involved in the game.

Interestingly, some relate this game to ‘Kim’s game’ from an old movie, where the protagonist develops a strong memory by recalling intricate details from a scene. Regardless of its origin, the K.I.M. game is a beneficial tool in training the brain to capture, store, and retrieve necessary details swiftly, significantly benefiting the player’s court awareness and overall game performance.

Either way, KIM is a way to improve your ability to take a “mental snapshot” and then access it at a later time. In basketball, this “snapshot” is constantly changing (e.g. locations of players) but since you can’t always see 100% of the court or all the players, having a picture in your mind that you can refer to is of immense value as you are figuring out what you should do next.

Here are some examples of KIM games that you might want to try…

KIM Game # 1 – Team Challenge

[FREEZE] Stop play and have all players close their eyes. Ask questions of each player to identify locations of other players on their team as well as the opposition. Team with most answers correct wins.

You can also take pictures from behind the defense at different points in a scrimmage and, later, use them as a challenge for your team to predict where every player was after seeing the picture for just a second or two.

KIM Game # 2 – Snapshot. Questions.

Take a mental picture of something. Examples could be a billboard (if you are driving), a bulletin board (in a school) or a scene from a particular perspective. Have each person answer questions based on their brief glimpse or “snapshot” of the scene or item(s).

KIM Game # 3 – What’s Different?

I got this exercise from professional speaker and World Champion of Public Speaking, Craig Valentine. He uses this as part of his speeches to help audience members recognize changes. He starts by asking audience members to pair up and designate one as the “observer” and one as the “changer”.

He then asks the “changer” to think of 6 things they could change. Craig quickly stops the exercise before it goes too far and he lets the audience know that 6 things is probably too much. He gives the changers a different goal… change one thing.

Next the pairs of audience members turn away from each other (back to back) and the “changer” changes 1 thing about their clothing or personal “look”, e.g. hair style, location of watch or other items.

After instructing the pairs to turn back toward each other, Craig asks the question, “What’s missing or changed?”. Most observers can pick out the one change.  He then repeats the exercise with two changes … and again the observer usually recognizes the changes.

What’s the moral of this story?

If you start small, you can learn to observe the changes and your ability to see relative changes can be expanded with practice.

The same thing applies to Court Awareness. By using these exercises along with ideas you develop yourself, players will train their brains to be more aware of the location of other players, where they are moving as well as other factors that are part of the game.

The Talent Mirage

When we see someone who performs at a high level, whether it is in music or sports or academically, we assume that a good part of their abilities are the result of talent, something they were born with. That’s the Talent Mirage.

We fail to recognize the amount of hard work and learning that it took to develop the skills that we see. That’s why Talent is a Mirage. It is something we see… that is not there. Talent is simply the [often highly polished] skills acquired over time based on hard work and learning.

Aren’t some people born with “talent”?

We are all born with differences but it would be delusion to call it “inborn talent”. For example, maybe our parents have developed skills in certain areas so we are exposed to something before someone else. That’s not talent… it’s environment.

What about someone who is born to tall parents and are likely to become tall? That is certainly a difference… but it doesn’t guarantee that this tall person will be good at basketball. A tall person who doesn’t develop a love of the game and a strong work ethic won’t amount to much of a player. On the other hand, a small or shorter person who loves the game and puts in the effort to develop their body to its highest potential while also learning skills to become a better basketball player can be highly successful.  It isn’t the cards we are dealt, it is how we play them. Talent is a mirage.

Attitude is more important than “Talent”

If you buy into the idea that “Talent” is just skills developed over time, then the key to putting in the time is ATTITUDE. Skill building is fueled by attitude. The hard work becomes FUN … with the right attitude. A player with the right attitude is coachable and can pick up ideas that will make them a better player.

A key part of “Attitude” is the ability to be okay being “bad”. One of my favorite quotes is by football coach and legendary business leader, A.L.Williams, who said…

“Remember, before you can be great, you’ve got to be good.

Before you can be good, you’ve got to be bad.

But before you can even be bad, you’ve got to try.”

If you are going to build your “pyramid of skills” that will lead to what society calls “Talent”, you will have to get used to being bad at something before you are good at it.  This is also related to the Growth vs. Fixed Mindset which I learned about through Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success“.

Growth = Skills Mindset
Fixed = Talent Mindset

In short, the Growth Mindset, according to Dweck’s book, is when someone see any challenge as an opportunity for growth. If they fail, the growth mindset says that they have not learned how to succeed or have not put in the work to develop the skills necessary to succeed. In other words, someone with the Growth mindset doesn’t let failure stop them. They continue to build their skills until they win.

Contrast that with the Fixed Mindset. Someone with a fixed (or “Talent”) mindset goes into every challenge with the assumption that they either have the talent to succeed or they don’t. If they fail, they conclude that they don’t have the talent for that activity and should not do it in the future. As you can imagine, the world of possibilities get smaller and smaller for someone with the “Talent mindset”.

Unfortunately, this Fixed / Talent mindset is often reinforced even when someone is successful… by friends, family or coaches who see the success as a result of “talent”. The question I have for you is … “If you are trying to get across a desert, would you drink the water pointed out by someone who sees a mirage?” The Talent Mirage is a trap. Don’t get sucked into believing in Talent. You may have Skills … and you will need more skills if you are going to compete at the highest levels.

Why do so many people
believe in the Talent Mirage?

Most often, it is a case of mis-matched timelines. If a 6th grader was playing against Michael Jordan, the timeline mismatch would be obvious. When players of the same age compete, it is almost impossible to see how much time (and hard work) each athlete has put into building their skills. It is easy to attribute this difference in skill levels to “talent”, especially if one player has certain physical gifts that seem to give them an advantage. Don’t get trapped by the Talent Mirage.

Don’t you want “Talented” players on your team?

YES… keeping in mind what that really means. We want players who have developed valuable skills and can perform at a high level. We also believe that players can be developed… given enough time and effort (with the right mindset / attitude). So, as coaches, our job is to recognize the skills that a player has while encouraging them to work hard to add other skills which will make them even more successful.

Bottom Line for you and I …

Take the first step on the skills pyramidDon’t use the Talent Mirage as an excuse for not putting in the effort to develop the skills that will allow you to compete at the highest levels. Don’t worry if you can’t see or even imagine all the skills you will need to become successful. Start where you are and keep working hard to improve… step by step. Someday someone will say “You are so Talented.” When that happens, just smile and say “Thank You”… knowing that you put in the effort over time to get where you are. Remember… Talent is a Mirage.

 

Next Level Basketball

What does it mean for a player to “take their game to the next level”? It sounds like a good thing but without understanding the meaning it is hard to get there, right?

Plus… even if you have an idea of what the “next level” is for your basketball game, the question of “How do I take my game to the next level?” is still critically important.

This article will answer those questions (from Coach Wheeler’s perspective) and provide you with an example of a player who might Coach Wheeler could help “take their game to the next level.”

What are “the Levels”?

Below are the various levels from middle school through high school and even into college.  If you are interested in seeing some of the skills that are typically developed at each level, check out Coach Wheeler’s article on a Player Progression Plan. 

  • Middle School
  • High School – Player / non-starter… Losing team
  • High School – Player / starter… Losing team
  • High School – Player / non-starter… Winning team
  • High School – Player / starter… Winning team
  • High School – Player / starter… college-level skills (D3/Community College)
  • High School – Player / starter… All-state-Honorable mention
  • High School – Player / starter… All-state-2nd Team
  • High School – Player / starter… All-state-1st Team
  • College Starter – D3 / Community College
  • College Player * – D2
  • College Player * – D1

* There are obviously many levels within “college”.  Most players won’t need to worry about this since even “best in state” does not mean that you are guaranteed a scholarship at the college level.

There could be even more levels if you include various AAU team or individual milestones (tourney wins, elite team participation, etc.). Again, this is a simple framework for players that are working on their game, probably at some level in high school, and looking to go “to the next level”.

HOW do I go to the “Next Level”?

As mentioned earlier, Coach Wheeler’s article on development of Player Progression Plan has lots of clues for players looking to improve.

Beyond skill development, WINNING is another way to move up a level or two. Players on teams that win get more attention from people who evaluate players.

Since basketball is a team game, if you want to win more games, you need to look at your role on the team. What does the team need to win more games? How well are you performing your role on the team? How can you do more? Or better?

You might have some ideas for these questions but don’t settle for your own answers. ASK others to get a better idea of what will take your game to the next level.  ASK Coaches… your current coach (obviously), past coaches who have seen you play recently, AAU coaches, assistant coaches and even players whose basketball knowledge you respect.

When you ASK, you could say something like, “I want to take my game to the next level, what do you think I need to improve?” Be open to the answers but look for common answers that come up often. Also, don’t get upset if someone identifies a weakness that you are not proud of. Many people will only give you “good news” and it is important to value people who will “tell it like it is”. You don’t want sugar-coated feedback. You want the truth… and you need to act on the truth!

Coach Wheeler’s “Next Level real Player Example”:

Coach WheelerI coached this player as part of an AAU team when he was a freshman and he was a pretty good shooter. I won’t “name names” since I don’t want to embarrass him. Plus the advice could apply to a number of players.

As a sophomore, our “example player” saw some good minutes on his varsity team but he played a secondary role to seniors who played a similar position.

When I saw him a year later in a summer league, he had improved his ability to drive and make shots. The team he played on did not have great players so he probably had to carry a bigger scoring load than he might on another team.

Next Level tip:

This player has pretty good court vision since he handles the ball most of the time and rarely dribbles into traps or places he might lose the ball. His court awareness is part of how he might take his game (and the success of his team) to the next level.

He should work with his team so that they move into scoring position as he drives. For example, wing shooters need to get open to potentially receive a kick-out pass. Big men need to recognize when he is going to drive and find a lane where they can be open if the opposition collapses on the driver. Even if the driver shoots, big men should be actively getting in position for the rebound.

How are all these things the responsibility of the player with the ball? First, basketball is a team game and even if you are the best player in the world the other players on the court need to be active. Michael Jordan did not win a single NBA championship before Coach Phil Jackson brought in the triangle offense and convinced MJ that involving others was in his best interest (especially if he wanted to win).

Second, if you are the primary ball handler (as this player is in our example) your key responsibility is to distribute the ball for the highest percentage shot possible. That means “getting the other players to move to the right places”. Sometimes the coach sets up plays for the team but more often players have to work together on the court in various situations.

This is just Coach Wheeler’s idea for how this player could get to “the next level”. As we mentioned earlier, he should be getting feedback from all the coaches in his life… and taking action.

Bottom line…

If you want to get better, you will have to take action. Basketball is highly competitive. You are not just competing within your school’s division. You are competing against everyone near your age who is playing basketball and trying to get to the next level. Remember, after your senior year in high school, no matter how good you are, the next year you are a freshman in college. From the big fish in the small pond to a small fish in THE OCEAN! The time to move to the Next Level is NOW. Don’t wait. Your future depends on it!
