The Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, initially couldn’t get past this obstacle. They were stuck, they were frustrated, and they were defeated. But did they whine about it? No. They evolved.

The Bulls took their failures as a challenge. They bulked up, they practiced harder, and Michael Jordan even worked on a more physical style of play. The result? They not only defeated the Pistons but went on to dominate the NBA.

It is a concept that I have encountered before but it is something that is not always easy to remember … or build into your everyday life.

In sports, there is always someone to blame. The key, especially for the players and the coaches, is to recognize your own responsibility because until you accept responsibility it is nearly impossible to improve. When you don’t take responsibility, you are saying that there is nothing that you can do to change your current or future situations and that is simply not true.

This concept extends far beyond the field or the court. In relationships, careers, and personal development, understanding the difference between responsibility and fault is crucial. It’s easy to fall into the trap of blaming external circumstances or other people for our failures. However, embracing responsibility, even when a situation is not our fault, empowers us to take control of our reactions and our future.

Consider a business leader who faces a sudden market downturn. They could blame the economy, competitors, or myriad other factors outside their control. While these might not be their fault, the responsibility to adapt and guide the company through the storm remains squarely on their shoulders. Taking responsibility does not mean accepting blame for things out of one’s control; it means recognizing the power to respond, adapt, and grow.

In everyday life, we can practice recognizing the difference between fault and responsibility by reflecting on our reactions to challenges. Ask yourself, “Is this situation my fault? Maybe not. But lingering in blame can create a mindset where progress is stunted, and opportunities are missed. The difference lies in whether blame is used as a stepping stone to understanding or as a barrier to personal growth.

After surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban for advocating for girls’ education, she could have blamed her circumstances, her country, or the political climate. No Decision is still a decision

Even if you do nothing, you are still making a decision. You have decided to do nothing and let the situation continue in whatever direction it might go. As we know, small problems grow into big problems, so doing nothing is rarely a good choice… but it is always your choice (even if you don’t believe it).

The paradox of inaction can be both comforting and alarming. On one hand, it emphasizes the control and autonomy you have in every situation. On the other, it reminds you that passivity is not a refuge but a choice with its consequences. This realization should not breed fear but inspire mindfulness in our decisions, whether active or passive.

In many ways, the decision to do nothing is a missed opportunity. It’s the road not taken, the chance not seized, the potential not realized. It can often be the product of fear, uncertainty, or a sense of inadequacy. But as author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins once said, “The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.” Imagine the possibilities that open up when you decide to take control and make deliberate choices.

Starting a meditation practice might seem daunting, but it can be as simple as finding a quiet space and dedicating a few minutes each day to focused breathing. Begin by sitting comfortably, closing your eyes, and paying attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves your body. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to the breath. The important part of this is not to keep your mind from wandering, it’s going to happen, but rather to recognize when your attention waivers and be able to bring your attention back to where you want it. Over time, this practice will strengthen your mindfulness muscles, empowering you to approach life with greater intentionality and “response-ability.”

One day, as he was brainstorming for ideas to make some extra money, he noticed that all the city’s hotel rooms were booked because of a design conference. An idea sparked in his mind – what if he could rent out space in his apartment to those who couldn’t find a hotel room?

This idea was the genesis of Airbnb, the online marketplace for lodging that has since become a multi-billion dollar company. Chesky’s story demonstrates all the key points in the concept of “Seez Opportunities”.

Stephen Curry is an exceptional figure in the world of sports. He’s a two-time NBA MVP and a three-time NBA champion. Yet, his rise to stardom wasn’t straightforward. His journey perfectly encapsulates the process of spotting and seizing opportunities, which has led to his extraordinary achievements.

Growing up…

Growing up, Curry was not considered the typical basketball prodigy. He was overlooked due to his smaller size and lean build, attributes that defied the conventional idea of a basketball star. However, instead of being disheartened, Curry saw this as an opportunity to redefine expectations and focused on developing his unique style of play.

Curry’s interest was clear; he wanted to excel in basketball. His goal was to play at a high collegiate level, aiming for Division I schools, but none of the top schools recruited him. Here, he utilized the concept of Reticular Activating System (RAS). Despite the rejection from top Division I schools, he didn’t let this hinder his vision. Instead, he broadened his perception. This move was an excellent example of challenging the traditional route and considering less obvious paths to achieve his goals.

It’s been said before, but, in the foundations of winning, Hustling is a key cornerstone. As often observed in sports, business, or any area demanding relentless competitiveness, it’s the quintessential difference-maker—the trait that often sets the exceptional apart from the ordinary. It’s a defining superpower, a competitive tool, a unique differentiator, and a core component of any winning strategy.

The Decision that leads to Hustling

Geno Auriemma, the esteemed coach of the UConn women’s basketball team, insists that “Attitude is a choice.” So too, is the decision to hustle. Hustle isn’t merely about raw effort. It’s strategic and purposeful. Like Auriemma’s squads meticulously dissecting their opponents on the court, you, in life and business, have to understand your competition and the dynamics of your playing field. Hustling is about reading the game, anticipating the next moves, and responding with unmatched swiftness and decisiveness.

But hustle doesn’t mean being reckless. It’s rapid, yes, but it’s also calculated. It’s about making your presence felt, creating opportunities, and seizing control. A true hustler is a disruptor, altering the course of the game.

Hustling as a Strategy

Hustle isn’t a standalone trait; it’s intrinsically woven into the fabric of a winning strategy. John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood, was known to say, “Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.” When the talent on the court is well-matched, the team that hustles—that gives a little more, fights a little harder—often tips the balance in their favor.

Your strategic hustle involves determination, resilience, and an unyielding will to win. It means running for every loose ball as if your life depends on it. Because, metaphorically, it does. Your future, your success, your victory—they all hang in the balance.

Building Your Hustle Muscle

Are you hustling?

There will be days when your spirit will flag and your motivation will hit rock bottom. On such days, recalling the wisdom of Jim Rohn, the motivational speaker who said, “Either you run the day or the day runs you,” can be particularly useful. Rohn understood that developing your hustle muscle might not be straightforward, but it’s essential.

Start with small steps, maintain consistency, and soon, your hustle muscle will become stronger. If you stumble, learn to pick yourself up and get back in the game. Resilience is the true essence of hustle.

Tony Robbins, the renowned life coach, often reminds us that “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” Similarly, you can’t build your hustle muscle if you never start. So, kickstart your journey, however daunting it might seem, and let your hustle guide you.

In any team or organization, fostering a culture of hustle can turbocharge the path to success. As a leader, your hustle should inspire your teammates. Let them witness your drive, your passion, your unrelenting pursuit of your goals. Set an example; become the embodiment of hustle.

Just as Coach K did at Duke, Dean Smith did at North Carolina, and John Wooden did at UCLA, be the kind of coach who encourages, uplifts, and instills the power of hustle in your team. Remember, hustle is contagious. Encourage it, and it will spread like wildfire.

What do you see when you look in the mirror every morning?

However, we often fall into the trap of becoming our own harshest critics. This skewed self-perception can create a harsher reality than what truly exists. Geno Auriemma, a renowned basketball coach, aptly said, “What you permit, you promote. What you allow, you encourage.” If we permit a distorted self-perception, we promote a distorted reality.

How can we adjust this perception? Robbins proposes changing our strategy. Understand that you are a work in progress. Recognize your flaws, but celebrate your strengths. Own your mistakes, but also revel in your victories. The pursuit is not for perfection but for progression. By embracing our complexities, we start altering the perception of self.

Overcoming Frustration

Overcome your frustration by changing your perception of reality

Embarking on the journey of changing perception isn’t easy. It’s fraught with frustrations and obstacles. But as Robbins advises, “Identify your problems but give your power and energy to solutions.” Frustrations are not walls, they are mirrors. They reflect what we need to understand about our perceptions and ourselves.

the “Myth” of Talent

I dislike the whole concept of “talent”. It assumes that some people have it and others do not. I believe that everyone is different and, for some people, “talent” may be buried or unseen for years or decades. Skill, on the other hand, is something that is always available for improvement. It is easy to see where you stand in terms of specific skills. On the other hand, the amount of “talent”, or even “potential talent” you have is difficult to determine precisely.

The fixed vs. growth mindset
Let’s start by saying that I am a firm believer in the growth mindset. Psychologist Carol Dweck wrote a book that said individuals can possess either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe that abilities are inherent, fixed traits that cannot be significantly developed. On the other hand, individuals with a growth mindset understand skills and abilities can be cultivated. You can grow your abilities through dedication, effort, and learning.

This mindset dichotomy has far-reaching implications for the perception of talent. Some argue that talent is an innate, predetermined quality that sets individuals apart. The concept of a growth mindset challenges this notion. By emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, practice, and resilience you can develop your skills to their full potential. By accepting a growth mindset, individuals can tap into their capacity for growth. This can unlock your true potential, blurring the lines between talent and skill.

The Skill Stack:

In the ongoing debate between skill and talent, one concept that challenges the conventional understanding is the “skill stack.” This is a term coined by the renowned cartoonist and author Scott Adams. The skill stack refers to the combination of various skills that an individual possesses. Rather than focusing solely on innate talent or singular expertise, the skill stack emphasizes the value of acquiring a diverse range of skills and leveraging them in unique ways.

According to Adams, the skill stack is like building a personal inventory of abilities that, when combined, create a unique advantage in the professional world. By developing a collection of skills, even if they are not individually exceptional, individuals can create a distinctive skill set that sets them apart from others. It’s a concept that challenges the notion that talent alone determines success and highlights the power of deliberate skill acquisition.

The skill stack approach opens up opportunities for individuals who may not possess a specific talent but are willing to invest time and effort into developing multiple complementary skills. Rather than relying on a single outstanding ability, individuals can tap into the potential of their skill stack, combining their strengths to tackle complex problems and adapt to changing environments. Talent is just the most visible part of your skill stack. It’s what is on top of the stack. It does not mean that you don’t have other, perhaps even more impressive, “talents” or undeveloped skills. It is just visible… now.

Talent is what you make of it
How old was Michael Jordan when he first dunked in a game? (see the video below) What if he never practiced after the first time? Would he have made it to the NBA? Would he win 6 NBA championships? Probably not.

You may see a glimpse of your talent early in your life. However, if it is not developed through hard work, learning your craft and attention to details, you will never achieve your highest potential.

In summary, the skill stack mentality challenges the myth of talent. By highlighting the acquisition and combination of diverse skills, you will be able to achieve your highest potential. Success is not solely determined by the abilities you were born with but rather by the deliberate cultivation of a varied skill set. By embracing the skill stack mentality approach, you can unlock your full potential, adapt to new circumstances, and carve out your own path to success in a dynamic and competitive world.

Mamba Mentality – a tribute to Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant coined the phrase, “Mamba Mentality” to describe his approach… to basketball, to competition, to life.

Mamba Mentality - tribute to Kobe BryantAs a life-long Celtics fan, it was hard for me to root for a Lakers player but you have to respect Kobe Bryant and his approach to the game of basketball. With his untimely passing, the time was right to take a look at how his mind worked and hopefully discover some of the secrets to his success.

I recently found the video below and it provides some of the best insights into how Kobe approached the game and his life. I’m not sure what else I can say except that it is well worth watching. If you want to be one of the best at something, this video will give you ideas that you can implement today. If you feel like you didn’t really know Kobe Bryant aside from his basketball career, this video provides glimpses into many other dimensions of the man.

Game Face – Get it ON!

This blog article is dedicated to Eddie Siebert. Coach Wheeler, back when he was Player Wheeler, played with (and won championships) with him. Eddie taught me about the importance of “game face”. His famous quote, before every game, was “Get Your Game Face On!”

The 3 types of basketball game face from the video are 1) Joyous, 2) No Expression and 3) Mean, Fierce or Angry. The video has some excellent NBA examples of each one so you can learn more about each one. The key to all of them is that they bring a focus to your game and just like you can improve your mood by physically smiling, the way you move your face can impact the way you feel and how you play the game.

Which one are you?

First, let me say that you NEED a Game Face. It is a sign to your team mates, your coach and even your opponents that you are serious about winning the game. The question is… Which game face works for you? I should also add that you may tap into different ones depending on the game situation and how you or your team is playing. Sometimes they need a “kick in the pants” and a Fierce Game Face might be needed. Or you might be getting shut down by the other team’s defense so you could break through and show some Joy (and your confidence) when you school them.

It is contagious!

Your attitude, demonstrated through your game face and how you play, is contagious and is an important way you can influence your team. Michael Jordan set a very high standard for the Bulls and they rose to the challenge. (The Washington Wizards… not so much.) What attitude are you bringing to your team? Are you making the practices more effective? Or just walking through them and not getting better? Your attitude & how you express it should help your team, not slow them down or give them reasons to doubt your commitment to winning.

Intensity Wins

This past week, I witnessed an interesting example of how “Intensity wins basketball games”. Before I tell you that story, let me explain what I mean by “Intensity” as it relates to athletic competition.

Focus + Energy = Intensity

I know you have seen it in games. One team or maybe just a few players on a team want to win more than the other team. They are more “dialed in” on what they need to do as well as what the other team is giving them. These teams have more energy and they get to the loose ball more often than the other team. They are focused. Nothing distracts them when their opponent applies pressure. They execute their game plan and adjust to situations as they come up. They are intent on winning. I have yet to see a team lose that maintains their level of concentration and engages with energy.

Are some times when teams overmatched and have little chance to win? Yes … but they are usually overmatched in how intense they are playing as well.

Where does Intensity come from?

As a coach, how can you improve the intensity that your team brings to the floor? It’s a deep subject but let me say this, “The ability to play with intensity is a skill that is built in the unseen hours of practice and the off-season.” Intensity, while a skill that can be improved, is also a form of character. Players with intensity have enough ego to believe they can win and the will or determination to make it happen. It is rarely something that happens by accident.

Back to this week’s game…

The teams were evenly matched with similar records. Physically they were very similar as well. The difference in the intensity that one team brought to the contest showed up early in the first half. They raced out to a good lead. Double digits at times.

The other team mustered a bit of competitive energy and fought back to within 6 points or so. The first team did not lose their intensity and rebuilt their lead. As the game winded down, with less and less time remaining, something interesting happened.

Intense Patience

The team with the lead applied their intensity toward being patient and getting the best shot they could. In this state there is no shot clock so they were able to extend their possession time which reduced the chances for a comeback by the other team.

There were a few sparks of intense effort from a couple players on the other team but there were other players who had clearly given up. In a team sport like basketball, if someone gives up it is very difficult for a team to function at a high level.

It was such a clear demonstration of how intensity wins basketball games that I had to pass along the story to you. Do you have examples of how your team’s intensity helped you win? Or the opposite?
